ROYAL ENGINEERS BUILDING

2 DAVEY STREET, HOBART 7000

Preserving Hobart’s History with Modern Comfort

A behind-the-scenes look at our work at 2 Davey Street

At Degree C, we’re proud to be part of projects that go beyond installation - projects that contribute to preserving Tasmania’s rich architectural history while bringing buildings into the future.

Our Hobart team have completed works at 2 Davey Street, better known as the Royal Engineers Building, originally opened in 1847. Heritage-listed and full of character, this site presented a unique opportunity, and a unique challenge.

Balancing Past and Present

As Charlie, our Sales & Project Manager, explains, heritage projects require a different level of care:

“It has been very nice to work on this project due to the heritage listing and all the work that's been involved to get this project completed.”

The goal was clear: deliver a modern, efficient climate solution without compromising the building’s historic appearance.

To achieve this, we installed a VRV (Variable Refrigerant Volume) system - allowing multiple indoor units to connect to a single outdoor unit. This approach provided flexibility, efficiency, and most importantly, minimal visual impact.

The Challenge: Stay Invisible

One of the most critical aspects of this project was maintaining the building’s external aesthetic.

Joe, our Refrigeration Technician, highlights what made this job stand out:

“One of the most unique things about this job was having to keep the look of the main heritage of the building, and not have too much obstruction.”

Careful planning and execution meant routing pipework discreetly from the roof space down through internal levels, ensuring everything remained as hidden and unobtrusive as possible.

The Most Rewarding Outcome

In many projects, visibility is a sign of progress. In this case, it was the opposite.

“Out of all of the work, this is the only part of the installation that you can see… apart from the indoor units inside.”

And that’s exactly what success looked like.

The final result is a clean, tidy installation that blends seamlessly into the building, preserving its historic charm while delivering modern comfort and performance.

Craftsmanship That Respects Heritage

Projects like this reinforce what we value most at Degree C:

  • Attention to detail
  • Respect for the built environment
  • Pride in workmanship

From carefully concealed pipework to a thoughtfully positioned outdoor unit, every decision was made with the building’s history in mind.

Supporting the Future, Respecting the Past

Heritage buildings tell stories and it’s our job to ensure those stories continue, without compromise.

We’re incredibly proud of Charlie, Joe, and the wider team for delivering a solution that honours the past while supporting the future.

Because sometimes, the best work is the work you can barely see.
