Mechanical Services
Risdon Prison - Mechanical Services Installation
Degree C was the successful contractor engaged to deliver a vast Mechanical Services solution for the Tasmanian Department of Justice and Industrial Relations’ new prison redevelopment complex at Risdon.
The project required Degree C to install air conditioning and ventilation to three substantial, adjacent sites within the new prison complex, the men’s prison, the women’s prison and the
Secure Mental Health Facility (the Wilfred Lopes Centre).
The SMHU Facility comprised one large building, while the mens’ and women’s prisons included several cell blocks (men’s low, medium and high security blocks, and women’s mother cell blocks) as well as education, health, visitors, guard houses and laundry buildings.
The extensive Mechanical Services Degree C installed included: |
Domestic hot water to most buildings |
Diesel fuel services to generators and the laundry |
Steam boilers and associated steam piping for the laundry |
Gatehouse rising barrier |
| |
Comprehensive Air-Conditioning systems were installed across the site, including full air-conditioning for all offices, guard houses, administration areas, and the visitors centre. The level of air-conditioning in the cell blocks is commensurate with the differing blocks’ structures: the high security cell blocks where inmates have very restricted movement outside of their cells and have no windows have greater levels of air conditioning compared to the low level security blocks where natural ventilation from outside is used to the maximum amount possible.
The comprehensive Air-Conditioning Systems installed by Degree C to all sites consisted of split ducted air-conditioning systems, with specially designed concealed ducting and high security ceiling or wall mounted air outlets. The exhaust system also consisted of similar purpose-designed concealed ducting and high security ceiling or wall mounted air outlets.
Due to the security required for such a site, all major equipment is predominantly located within dedicated internal plant rooms, which prevent unnecessary access and also facilitate the easiest possible maintenance access within a prison environment. |
